Custom Finished Hardwood Floors

We stain and finish our hardwoods in our shop in East Austin before they ever enter your home. Since we customize everything in-house, we are able to guide you to the material that best suits your construction requirements and design guidelines while minimizing any construction mess in your home.

There are seven main factors to consider when designing the perfect hardwood floors for your space.

SPECIES

Every project begins with matching the right species for your needs. This step affects the color range, durability, longevity, strength, and overall look of your floor. The Janka Hardness scale can help you determine what kinds of hardwoods can meet your specific needs. Artisan Hardwood Floors sources materials as locally as possible, but our partner relationships are global. From Texan Mesquite to Appalachian Hickory to French Oak, we help you identify the material that will allow you to balance the strength you need with the look you want.

CUT & GRADE

Wood selected for flooring comes in a wide range of grades that are established by the National Hardwood Flooring Association. Sometimes referred to as “character,” grade refers to the visibility and variation of the grain pattern and is largely influenced by the milling process used to create it.

SIZE

Floor materials come in a variety of sizes, typically ranging from three inches wide to twelve inches or more. Size availability largely depends on one’s preferred species, but this choice can make the difference between mid-century modern and contemporary farmhouse.

COLOR

Our process combines traditional staining techniques with hand-mixed pigments and cutting-edge UV-cured protective top coats to produce a wide range of colors and tones to suit your space and sense of style.

TEXTURE

A good floor can be silky smooth, but it doesn’t have to be. We can strip away several layers of material for deep aged texture, rough cut for a more rugged feel, or sand it clean.

PATTERN

Pattern choices are style choices. Your home can be as traditional as a statehouse, or as eclectic as a SoHo artist loft. Straight-lay, mixed-width, diagonal, chevron, herringbone, basket-weave, parquet, hounds-tooth, and custom inlays are all possible with the right tools and knowledge. Thankfully, we have both of those things.

FINISH

Some of our customers prefer the glossy shine of polyurethane while others enjoy the soft appearance of natural wood. We use low-VOC finish materials whenever possible, and offer traditional options when necessary. We can pre-finish your floor before it ever leaves our shop, reducing the amount of unnecessary construction mess in your home. Your floor should last a lifetime, and we want that time to be as healthy and happy as possible.

I am just very, very, very happy with all of the work that Artisan has done over the years starting in 1983 when the house was built and then and in the subsequent years. As we have always called upon you.

feature installation

Hardwoods can and should be so much more than just floors and Artisan is a full-service wood shop. The same natural materials used to create your floors can also become decorative feature walls, custom barn doors, acoustic echo canceling ceilings, or comfortable coverings for outdoor spaces.

Refinishing in Place

Artisan Hardwood Floors is one of the very few shops in Central Texas capable of performing refinishing services on your existing floors. Depending on the thickness of your hardwood, a floor can be sanded and refinished 3 or 4 times, extending its life for decades and offering you a chance for the occasional “do-over” without incurring the full cost of entirely new materials.

Maintenance & Repair

Hardwoods are organic materials that continuously react to changes in the environment. And since every environment is unique, so is our approach to maintenance and repair work. Whether you need a professional deep-cleaning or a hand-matched repair, we will do everything we can to help restore your floor to its beautiful natural state.
